Sharp-interface nematic-isotropic phase transitions with flow
We present a sharp-interface theory for phase transformations between the isotropic and uniaxial nematic phases of a flowing liquid crystal. These equations include a supplemental interface condition which expresses the balance of configurational momentum. As an application, we study the behavior a spherical isotropic drop surrounded by a radially-oriented nematic phase. For this problem, the b...
متن کاملContinuum limits of atomistic energies allowing smooth and sharp interfaces in 1D Elasticity
In this paper we present two atomistic models for the energy of a one-dimensional elastic crystal. We assume that the macroscopic displacement equals the microscopic one. The energy of the first model is given by a two-body interaction potential, and we assume that the atoms follow a continuous and piecewise smooth macroscopic (continuum) deformation. We calculate the first terms of the Taylor ...
متن کاملOn sharp interface limits for diffuse interface models for two-phase flows
We discuss the sharp interface limit of a diffuse interface model for a two-phase flow of two partly miscible viscous Newtonian fluids of different densities, when a certain parameter " > 0 related to the interface thickness tends to zero. In the case that the mobility stays positive or tends to zero slower than linearly in "we will prove that weak solutions tend to varifold solutions of a corr...
متن کاملInterface identification by non-local autoionization transitions.
We use an autoionization process that involves ultrafast energy transfer to neighbouring sites to characterize the formation of NeAr van der Waals bonds in clusters formed by a coexpansion of both gases. This autoionization process, the so-called interatomic or intermolecular coulombic decay (ICD), is ubiquitous in weakly bonded systems. The energy of the electron being emitted in the ICD proce...
متن کاملSharp Interface Limit of a Homogenized Phase Field Model for Phase Transitions in Porous Media
A homogenized phase field model for phase transitions in porous media is considered. By making use of the method of formal asymptotic expansion with respect to the interface thickness, a sharp interface limit problem is derived. This limit problem turns out to be similar to the classical Stefan problem with surface tension and kinetic undercooling.
